Pre order your piece of history
When I started photographing IU Athletics events in 1986 an NCAA Basketball Championship topped the wish list of assignments. In 1986 I drew the assignment for the Cleveland State game in Syracuse (an auspicious start), and in 1987 I kept busy covering the celebrations in Bloomington. At the same time IU Football had a strong run under Head Coach Bill Mallory and a string of bowl games followed. The conventional wisdom persevered, though, that Indiana was a basketball school. There was plenty of football excitement over the years, but nothing like the last two years.
In 2001 I moved to New York so I have been limited to covering IU when they come to the east coast. Our son decided he wanted to attend IU so I managed to arrange a campus visit the weekend they hosted Maryland in Coach Cignetti's first season. He's a sophomore at IU this year (thanks in part to your support of Leap of Faith). Coming full circle, the 2025 season schedule made possible my first visit to Maryland and a return to Penn State. After the historic win in Beaver Stadium in week 10 there was no way I was missing the Big Ten Championship.
My Leap of Faith to fly to Indianapolis opened the door to the pinnacle of assignments--a string of top tier bowl games and a stunning 16-0 season. I was fortunate to create a body of work that became Leap of Faith, the book, featuring 350+ images, selected from thousands, to spark memories for IU fans for years to come.
Now is your chance to order your own copy. The books are scheduled to arrive from the printer the week before Thanksgiving!
It took a village to get this ready for the Hoosier Nation
The days of a publication footing the bill to send me to each of the CFP games are a distant memory, so after the OSU game I rallied a group of friends and fans to crowdfund my travel expenses. One game at a time. My first objective was to give them access to unique images along the way, and a nice book in the end. Fortunately the Hoosiers prevailed, and I was in the right spot more often than not so the book became a bigger production than expected.
Have you seen the first version?
Not many of them are in circulation, but if you've seen the version without the White House event that was a custom printed edition. This version is the same one given to the people who helped make the trips possible, and a small number of additional copies were produced. The video above is of one of these editions. The printed book will be quite different so at this point additional copies are not available.
The print edition is coming!
The print edition will arrive the week before Thanksgiving and expands on the digital version. I'm working on expanding the text to incorporate more perspectives on the season, and the dimensions of the book will be slightly larger so the layouts might change a little bit but all of the same images will be in this version.
How do you take your leap?
There are several ways to take your own Leap of Faith. Use one of the links below, or reach out to use at orders@leapoffaiththebook.com about volume purchasing options.
Take control of your memories
You might have seen my work in The Bloomingtonian or The Daily Hoosier, after the games, but the experience of seeing those images and more in a book format is unique. There's a good chance your social media is still peppered with clips and reels from the CFP games, but they are an algorithm change away from disappearing. A book isn't at risk of vanishing over night--other than your friends wanting to take it home. Now they can easily get their own copy!
What's inside
Leap of Faith, the book, is centered on images by Garrett Ewald. Two other photographers also have memorable images in the book. Tom Russo was on the opposite side of the field for the Leap of Faith play so you get to see the play from two angles. A couple more come from a new acquaintance, Doug Beckner, who drives the IU Football equipment truck to away games. He surprised me with some excellent images when I asked him to hold a camera while I rushed on the field after the Penn State game. The print edition will incorporate essays by a wide range of people with interesting perspectives on the season. As the list firms up more details will be posted here. If you have an idea for someone to write an essay let me know!
